Started this thread so the topic isnt riding another one.
I've never done it, I might be into it or I might not. I am going to shoot to pick some sort of cyclocross route to ride at least once a week.
Anyone is free to tag along.
Birch State Park trails might be a good quick ride as well. That route could be tied in with the alleys in Victoria Park.
Here are some races. The photo makes it look unappy and hot out...I am going to sign up for the Dyer Park and Miami races (Cat 5).
- November 7-8, 2009 -- Orlando/Clermont
- November 14-15 or 21-22, 2009 -- Lakeland/Dade City
- December 5-6, 2009 -- Tallahassee (state championship)
- January 9-10, 2010 -- Miami
- January 16-17, 2010 -- Dyer Consequences - West Palm Beach/Hobe Sound
South Florida’s Cyclocross Event is January 16, 2010 at Dyer Park
Forget the guy that crashes into the barrier in the beginning, check out the guy that flys over the barrier around the 2:20 mark.
Isn't Cat 4 the lowest in CX? I see they list a Cat 5 race at Dyer, but according to USA cycling, that category doesn't exist. Even my race license lists me as Cat 4 for CX.
Angel, I'll work your pit. Better buy another bike.
...and I thought CX was supposed to be cold an miserable. January in Florida should be the best riding conditions of the entire year.
That is correct, CX only goes as low as CAT 4 (as my license also indicates), why the flyer has a CAT 5 is anybody's guess. I also noticed that the flyer has no entry fee posted on it, so I called the bike shop hosting it (On Your Mark) to let them know of the mistake and at first I got silence, then an "oh shit". Then they were able inform me that the race fee is $25, which I sent out today.
So, now that I have registered and thanks to Jeremy's insight, I realize I don't know what the whole pit deal is, and if I need another bike then its going to have to be the tall bike. Isn't there a beer pit involved? I need to research this whole cross thing a little more and I don't want to crush my nuts attempting a Belgium mount.
Victoria Park and Birch has been my plan. Went to birch this morning, just to find out that they open at 8a.m. That's like mid afternoon for me. I'm gonna go to quiet waters on friday, I figured anything that is unrideable can always be done by foot. Whenever you wanna go, let me know.
I rode Birch this morning. It was really short, but there were some trails in there. The single track stuff reminded me a lot of the old quiet waters, except they were less then a half mile in length. I also hit up a couple ogf spots in rio vista and vic park. Birch is a great place if its one of the stops you'll make on a ride. The only downside is you have to stop and pay $2. I think Oleta would be perfect.
I would have to do Birch in the evening and tie it into another ride since I have to be at work at 8:30. I think Quiet Waters and Oleta would be the best bet. I get out ot work at 6:30pm sometimes 7:30pm to go ride. I could meet you out at Oleta or Quiet Waters to start riding in the evenings if you want. On the weekend I would probably pedal out there to bring the pain.
I'm down for Saturday or Sunday morning. A ride to QW or markham is a nice truck. There are a lot of places to incorporate training downtown too, so I'm up for night rides.
Markham sunday morning?
No flats yet, but something tells me that with the new tires I'll be seeing some.
That shit looks awesome. If I remember anything from being 6 it's that playing in the mud is tits.
Katie Compton is good at everything. Check out what went down at the Cincinnati Cross Fest (which she won)...
It was an uneventful ride for the U.S. champion, other than haggling with hecklers about their choice of a beer hand-up (a canned Pilsner). When a bottle of microbrew was produced the following lap, she obligingly hit the brakes, took the hand-up and chugged a good portion before dismounting for the barriers.
“At first I wasn’t going to, since this is a UCI race and we’re not supposed to take feeds,” she said with a smile. “But I had yelled back at them, ‘How about a microbrew?’ the lap before. So when they actually had one, I felt kind of obligated.”
